This occurs when launching game directly from xrengine.exe in bin, or from a shortcut made directly to that. To fix, launch from the gog shortcut found in the main directory, or create a shortcut to the desktop of that gog shortcut. I hope that works!

you immediately notice the repeated lines in the file, read as follows:
